Past Gigs

2011

31st March Ladyfest Comedy Night,  Edinburgh City Football Club Well this gig went and sold out didn’t it! That was nice – and ladyfest gigs are nice. One woman told me I should laminate my drawings. She’s probably right – but I don’t know where to get something A1 laminated! Good gig though :)

4th March Carnival of Feminist Cultural Activism, University of York What a fab first gig of 2011! I wasn’t sure about how this was going to be as I was exhausted and a little emotional about job loss, but the audience was so wonderful it didn’t really matter! I met lots of ace academicy types of people, got to go to a writing workshop with Toni Morrison’s Beloved as a starting point. I even got to drink cocktails with feminist names. Preaching to the converted perhaps, but still totally awesome fun. It’s not often I worry my material won’t be feminist enough but this was one such occaision. Big thanks to the Uni of York for having me. I took a mailing list at this event for my zine and news and such, when I get this site figured out I will get one on here too.

2010

September 26th Soapbox weekend Edinburgh – Fun gig upstairs in the Forrest, had a lot of my friends at that one which always makes me a bit nervous, what if they don’t find me funny? What if it’s a bit akward when I have to talk to them afterwards? Luckily it wasn’t and hopefully good times were had by all.

September 11th 7:30pm-10:30pm, The Cannon’s Gait, Cannongate (you know, bottom end of ‘Royal Mile’) Edinburgh compere at feminist herstory pub quiz. I haven’t done much compering so I wasn’t sure how this was going to go. I think it went pretty well, but I would think that, I was drunk. I went dressed as bell hooks – with a big bell made out of card and foil, and 2 hooks for hands made out of coat-hangers. It was a good costume, I would have given myself a prize for best costume, but that would have seemed a bit off.  The winning prize was chocolates, and the boobie prize was a trinny and susannah book which I had spent time defacing. The team that came last were actually gender studies phd students. Good times were had by all.

Friday 27th August Funny women showcase 11:30 AM at The Caves, Niddry Street Edinburgh

I won’t go as far as to say that this was my worst ever gig, but it was VERY BAD. It was on at 11:30 in the morning during fringe time, at a cost of 8 quid, the only audience members were 2 boyfriends of performers and the other comedians. I arrived a bit late (misread email) and was told off by a stern school maam of a woman. Needless to say I didn’t make it into the next round. Competitions are for losers anyway right?

30th May Laughing Lasses Gig, The Telegraph Bar, Newcastle

Another interesting gig, this time the audience were very receptive to my material, with the exception of one heckler who got offended enough to walk out. I found this odd, given the fact that some of the other performers included genuinely offensive material (which had I not been an act I would perhaps have walked out myself) . Her main complaint seemed to be that I was not a lesbian; she was too busy chatting to note some of the sarcasm in my tone when I was talking about gendering of technology and the colour pink. Ultimately the audience were on my side – though me being me I did stew over whether or not I was being offensively hetero-normative.  Luckily a group of lesbians at the next table reassured me.  I had fun, though the presence of some self hating women humour, rape jokes and racism was ultimately more aggravating than the heckler, and left me wandering if it’s possible to perform on the local scene without coming up against that.

5th February Laughing Horse Comedy Competition heat, Friday 5th February The Beehive,  Grassmarket, Edinburgh.

Interesting gig, was only female performer and didn’t make it into the top 5 (out of 8).  Other comedians in backstage area introduce themselves to my boyfriend, not to me, assuming him to be the comedian, smoooooth. Gig included a racist misogynist tirade by Daniel Webster, after which point my boyfriend and I left, and came back just in time to find out I hadn’t won. My own set went ok,  think the audience were a bit bemused.

2009

20th October from 8:30 Stand Up @ The Still:  The Illicit Still, Brougham Street, Edinburgh. Good crowd, my first heckler, and my first non woman-centric gig for a while. Was a bit flustered cos I came just from work, but still had a good time.

24th September Ladyfest Edinburgh @ Football club top of Leith Walk. Had a really great night with Sian Bevan, Jojo Sutherland, Elaine Malcolmson and Lucy Oldham. Pictures/review on press/photos bit.

14th August @ Word of Mouth Cafe, Leith Walk Edinburgh, Open Mic poetry night – did some poems and previewed my ‘I wanna be in a band’ song. Really fun, great atmosphere and lovely food/coffee.

March – North Edinburgh Women of Acheivement Awards, North Edinburgh Arts Centre. Was really nervous about this one, and there was a very wide age range including children and much older women, but it went down a treat. An inspirational night watching what other less pratty women are achieving in their communities.

February  -Reclaim the Night Fundraiser @the Bowery with Withered Hand and others. Also a really great night, mixing comedy with music, doing comedy in a gig was a bit weird, but it worked.
